About the event
FCO is back in 2024 with a very special program of Handel, Bach and Mahler.
When life gets hectic, a dose of calming Baroque music is surely the answer. That’s what the first half of this performance is all about with two great composers, Handel and Bach, both born in 1685.
The concert opens with Handel's festive Concerto Grosso Op. 6 No 12, composed in 1739.
Next is Bach’s exquisite Concerto for Two Violins and String Orchestra BWV 1043
Performed by brilliant violinists and sisters, Rebecca Gloria and Andrea Mendham, this will be an unmissable delight.
Framed by energetic fast movements Bach’s Double is utterly uplifting. The second movement is a gentle, serpentine love song where the two solo violins completely intertwine in a 300 year old conversation of love and equality. It is among the most sensuous and emotive of all Bach’s concerto movements.
After the interval, we are transported to the very last moments of romanticism with the first and third movement of Mahler’s 4th Symphony (arranged for chamber orchestra). This is a soundscape of childhood innocence, echoes of folk songs, carpets of sound punctuated by memories. Allow yourself to be transported.
